Question and Wonder:
Use one bowl of snow to explore. Feel it, smell it, taste it. What is snow? Where does it come from? Where does it go? Why is it here sometimes and not others? What does it smell like? What does it taste like? What does it feel like?
Imagine and Design:
Now set out the milk, vanilla, sugar and spoon. Explore these other materials. Make observations by smelling, tasting and feeling.
How do you think we can combine these ingredients to make a sweet treat?
What part snow? What part milk? What part sugar? What part vanilla? Design a recipe to test. Write it down.
Test and Discuss:
Mix and taste your creation. What do you think? How does it taste? Does it need more of something? Less of something? Make adjustments to your recipe and try again. Continue adjusting your recipe until you have something that tastes yummy.
Look back on your different variations. What did you learn through your experimenting?
Share your perfect snow cream recipe with a friend or relative. Write it on a note card and send it in the mail.
