Question and Wonder:

What do you think the word gratitude means?  (Gratitude is when we express appreciation and thanks for the good things in our lives.)

What are some things that you are thankful for?

What are some different kinds of ways we can say thank you/express appreciation for something?

How do you feel when someone does something nice for you?

How do you feel when you do something nice for someone else?

Imagine and Design:

Daily for a week, or a month or more……think about and share aloud the things that you are thankful for.  Try to develop ways to go beyond being thankful for things (toys, favorite foods) and work to include special people, activities that are enjoyable, something that inspired awe or excitement, something that made you feel special or loved, etc.  Have every member of the family write one thing down on a sticky note and post it in your designated space.  (For small children have someone act as the scribe.)

Test and Discuss:

After some time, or at intervals if you continue doing this exercise for a while, look back on your wall gratitude.  Talk about what you notice and how you feel.   Design a special way to keep track of all that you are thankful for.  Perhaps you can take photos of your wall and turn them into a coffee table book at the end of the year, or clear the wall every so often and keep the sticky notes in a box so that on New Years Eve you can look back as a family at all the things you were grateful for that year.  Turn several items that you write into your family motto and make a piece of art to hang over your door.  You decide!
